Stablecoin monitoring — continuous circulation, holdings & AML

Monitoring stablecoins on two axes — issuer-level circulation / holdings / health, and AML risk — and where ChainAnalyzer's issuer dashboard and transaction monitoring fit in.

What stablecoin monitoring is

Stablecoin monitoring is the practice of continuously observing the on-chain state of an issued stablecoin and tracking, on one data foundation, both (1) issuer-side metrics — supply, distribution and health — and (2) AML-side metrics — exposure to illicit fund flows, sanctioned entities and scam clusters. Because a stablecoin's ledger is public, every issuance, redemption and transfer is verifiable on-chain. Turning that transparency into operational value requires continuous, time-series monitoring rather than one-off scans.

1. The three layers to monitor

Continuous stablecoin monitoring is easier to implement when split into three layers of a different nature.

  • Circulation layer: cross-chain trends in issuance, redemption and net circulating supply, reconciled against issuer-published figures
  • Holdings layer: concentration of top holders, distribution skew, and turnover among large wallets — excessive concentration in a single address is a health-risk signal
  • Health / AML layer: continuous matching of transfer flows against OFAC sanctions, mixers, scam clusters and no-KYC exchanges, plus detection of threshold-exceeding transfers

Note: the definition of circulating supply varies by issuance model (generally issued minus operational holdings; for trust-type structures, total supply). Set your baseline to match the issuance structure of the target stablecoin.

2. Issuer-level continuous monitoring (Issuer Dashboard)

ChainAnalyzer provides a public dashboard that monitors stablecoins at the issuer level. For major stablecoins such as JPYC, USDC, USDT, PYUSD and EURC, it visualises cross-chain circulating supply, holder distribution and operational-wallet movement from on-chain measurement, tracked over time. Issuers and handlers can grasp their stablecoin's real circulation in a third-party-verifiable form, usable as evidence for supervisors and counterparties.

  • Cross-chain circulation: measured net circulating supply aggregating issuance, redemption and bridge movement per chain
  • Holder distribution: continuous tracking of top-holder concentration and dispersion (separating institutional from retail flow)
  • Operational-wallet verification: identifying wallets used for issuance/redemption to suppress false positives on legitimate operations
  • Health signals: time-series detection of abrupt concentration changes and abnormal large movements

3. AML monitoring (transaction surveillance)

Because stablecoins are used for settlement, they are also abused to move illicit funds. Issuers, handlers and receiving businesses need transaction-level AML monitoring on top of circulation monitoring.

  • Pre-transfer screening: matching the receiving address against OFAC SDN, the in-house ScamDB, the known-entities registry, Neo4j graph proximity and ML anomaly scores
  • Threshold detection: automatic flagging of transfers exceeding the FATF Travel Rule reference, with an evidence trail (thresholds may be revised — confirm primary sources)
  • Continuous monitoring: automatic rescans of watched wallets every 1–24 hours, with email / webhook alerts on risk change
  • Record retention: detection results and screening evidence preserved as tamper-evident audit logs

4. What ChainAnalyzer supports

ChainAnalyzer delivers issuer-side circulation/holdings/health monitoring and AML-side transaction monitoring on one platform. It covers 9 live chains (including Kaia); BNB Smart Chain ships on Enterprise rollout.

  • Issuer dashboard: continuous on-chain visualisation of each stablecoin's circulation, holdings and health
  • Transaction monitoring: AML surveillance via pre-transfer screening, threshold detection and continuous rescans
  • Evidence retention: automatic generation and retention of audit-ready compliance evidence
  • Alert integration: instant webhook / email notification of risk change, embeddable into existing flows

5. FAQ

How is stablecoin monitoring different from AML monitoring?

Stablecoin monitoring is the broader concept, including issuer-side observation of circulation, holder distribution and health. AML monitoring is the transaction-surveillance aspect that detects exposure to illicit flows, sanctions and scams. ChainAnalyzer provides both on one data foundation.

How is circulating supply measured?

Issuance, redemption and bridge movement are measured on-chain per chain and aggregated cross-chain into net circulating supply. The definition varies by model (generally issued minus operational holdings; total supply for trust-type structures) and is matched to the target stablecoin's structure.

Can I monitor a stablecoin I issue or handle?

Yes. You can continuously visualise circulation, holdings and health on the issuer dashboard while setting transaction monitoring on operational wallets and receiving flows. Watched wallets are rescanned periodically and you are notified on risk change.

What is the value threshold for detection?

FATF Recommendation 16 references USD/EUR 1,000 internationally, but Japan's specific threshold follows JVCEA self-regulatory rules and FSA guidance. Because these can be revised, confirm the latest primary sources at implementation time.
